Midland, Texas – Strong storms are expected to batter parts of West Texas Monday night, with a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 2 a.m. CDT Tuesday, covering over two dozen counties from Gaines to Tom Green.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes the potential for 60 mph wind gusts, large hail, and frequent lightning across regions including Midland, Odessa, San Angelo, and Andrews. Drivers are urged to avoid travel on U.S. 87, I-20, and rural highways as storms intensify after sunset.

Counties under the watch include Ector, Howard, Crockett, Sutton, and Mitchell, with scattered cells already forming near the Permian Basin. Power outages are possible, and outdoor events should be delayed or canceled. Residents should charge phones and secure loose outdoor items.

This storm threat follows a stretch of hot, dry weather, increasing the risk of wind damage as dry soils loosen roots. Emergency officials remind residents to stay indoors during severe storms and listen for future warnings on NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts.

The watch remains in effect through 2 a.m. CDT, with additional warnings likely as storms evolve overnight.
