Medford, Oregon – Strong thunderstorms could strike southwest Oregon and parts of northern California Tuesday afternoon, bringing a chance of damaging hail and dangerous wind gusts through 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, there is a marginal (5%) risk for severe thunderstorms across Jackson, Klamath, Lake, Siskiyou, and Modoc counties. Storms may produce hail one inch in diameter or larger and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. The greatest risk is expected between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Communities including Medford, Ashland, Klamath Falls, Yreka, and Alturas could experience isolated to scattered storms, some of which may become briefly severe. Lightning is a concern with all storms, even outside the main risk zones.

Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts, especially those with outdoor plans or travel along highways such as I-5, U.S. 97, and OR-140. “If thunder roars, go indoors,” the NWS advised in Monday’s update.

To stay safe, keep mobile alerts enabled, charge devices ahead of time, and secure outdoor items that could be blown away. No widespread flooding or tornado risk is anticipated.

Severe thunderstorm potential lingers through late evening. Additional advisories may be issued if storms strengthen or expand across the region.
