Warmer-than-normal temperatures are expected to dominate the Mid-Atlantic from August 5–9, while a more active weather pattern increases the likelihood of scattered showers and thunderstorms across much of the region. The combination of above-average warmth and periodic rainfall is expected to bring humid conditions to millions of residents from Pennsylvania south through Virginia.

According to the Climate Prediction Center’s 6–10 Day Outlook issued July 30, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia are all favored to experience above-normal temperatures during the period. The precipitation outlook also leans above normal across much of the Mid-Atlantic, particularly from eastern Pennsylvania through New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and into Virginia, supporting multiple opportunities for rain and thunderstorms.

Cities including Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Richmond, Virginia, are likely to experience several days of warm, humid weather with intermittent rounds of showers or thunderstorms. Washington, Baltimore, Wilmington, Charleston, and Newark could also see locally heavy downpours capable of producing brief urban flooding, reduced visibility, and slower travel during heavier rain.

While widespread washouts are not anticipated, the pattern favors repeated chances for rainfall rather than prolonged dry weather. Outdoor recreation, construction projects, and travel plans may require flexibility as thunderstorms develop, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Residents should also remain prepared for lightning, localized gusty winds, and isolated areas of ponding on roads during heavier showers.

The overall signal points toward a warm and unsettled stretch continuing through August 9, with temperatures remaining above seasonal averages while periodic rainfall helps limit more prolonged heat.
