Sterling Heights, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close a portion of southbound M-53 between M-59 (Hall Road) and 18 Mile Road for three consecutive weekends this November. The closures, planned for essential bridge repairs over the Clinton River, aim to improve the driving surface and address drainage issues. The repairs are part of a $16 million investment to enhance the M-53 corridor near Utica.
The closures will occur from 5 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday on the following dates: November 9-11, November 16-18, and November 23-25. During these times, southbound M-53 traffic will detour via westbound M-59, southbound Mound Road, and eastbound 18 Mile Road.
According to MDOT, work on the bridge started in August but was delayed due to unexpected structural issues. The northbound M-53 upgrades should also conclude by the end of November, weather permitting.
Drivers should plan for added travel time or consider alternate routes during the closures. MDOT recommends checking traffic updates to stay informed about detours and project progress.
