Detroit, MI — Southeast Michigan is set to experience a wintry mix of rain and snow through New Year’s Day, potentially affecting holiday travel plans. The National Weather Service forecasts rain today, transitioning into snow overnight with total accumulations of 1 to 3 inches in areas along I-94.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, daytime temperatures in the mid-30s will limit snow buildup to grassy and elevated surfaces. However, after sunset, temperatures are expected to drop into the low 30s, making roads slick. Motorists traveling along I-94, especially near Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Monroe, should prepare for reduced visibility and icy conditions late tonight and into Wednesday morning.
Gusty winds, reaching up to 29 mph overnight, may compound travel hazards, particularly for high-profile vehicles. Commuters should plan ahead and consider delaying early morning travel on New Year’s Day to allow road crews time to clear snow.
The five-day forecast shows predominantly cloudy skies with daytime highs near freezing through the end of the week. Thursday and Friday are expected to be drier, with highs in the upper 20s and lows dipping into the teens.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and ensure vehicles are winter-ready with snow brushes, emergency kits, and proper tires.
