Michigan’s northern interior starts the day with a sharp, biting chill as frost clings to rooftops and open fields. Breath hangs in the air, and wind chills dip even lower across exposed areas.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures dropped into the upper 20s to near 32 degrees across Gaylord, Petoskey, Alpena, and Grayling early this morning, with colder pockets inland away from Lake Michigan and Lake Huron . A freeze warning remains in place through about 8 a.m., with another freeze expected late tonight into Saturday morning.

This is part of a broader system pushing much-below-average temperatures across the Great Lakes, keeping early May conditions unusually cold.

The biggest impact is on vegetation and agriculture. Crops, fruit blossoms, and backyard gardens face damage or loss if left unprotected. Low-lying rural areas near Otsego County and interior valleys will see the coldest readings, with temperatures dipping into the mid to upper 20s.

Drivers should also stay alert. Patchy moisture from overnight clouds and light snow showers may create slick spots on bridges and elevated stretches of M-32 and I-75, especially before temperatures climb above freezing. Reduced traction is possible in shaded roadways.

Conditions improve into the afternoon as highs reach the mid-40s with partial sunshine. However, another cold drop is expected tonight, with widespread frost redeveloping after sunset.

Five-day outlook:
Saturday: Morning frost, then sunny, high near 46°F
Sunday: Patchy frost early, then milder, high near 56°F
Monday: Chance of showers, high near 62°F
Tuesday: Rain and snow mix possible, high near 50°F
Wednesday: Continued rain/snow chances, high near 50°F
