Grand Rapids, MI – Lake effect snow showers are expected to continue through Saturday morning, creating slick conditions along I-96 between Muskegon and Lansing. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Saturday, with motorists urged to exercise caution.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the snow will be heaviest overnight into Friday morning, with winds gusting up to 28 mph. New snow accumulations are forecasted to remain under an inch, but roads could become icy, reducing travel speeds. The affected areas include Grand Rapids, Allendale, and portions of Kent County.

Friday’s high temperature will reach 25°F, with snow tapering off by the afternoon. A slight chance of snow showers will linger into Friday night as temperatures drop to 18°F. Winds will decrease slightly but remain a factor in travel conditions.

Looking ahead to Saturday, skies are expected to clear, offering mostly sunny conditions by the afternoon. Highs will reach 26°F with lighter winds, providing some relief for travelers. However, another round of light snow showers could return late Sunday into Monday.

Officials urge drivers to plan for extra travel time, particularly along major routes like I-96. Pedestrians and outdoor enthusiasts should also prepare for icy surfaces.

Stay tuned to local weather updates and plan accordingly for the first weekend of the new year.
