Marquette, MI – With warming temperatures and a weekend storm system on the horizon, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula faces multiple weather threats through Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, daytime highs well above freezing are weakening ice on interior lakes and rivers, posing significant hazards across central and western Upper Michigan. Ice conditions are rapidly deteriorating in counties including Keweenaw, Houghton, Baraga, Marquette, Alger, Luce, Gogebic, and Delta.

Forecasters warn that from Friday through Sunday, the region could also experience impactful winter weather, including freezing rain and accumulating snow. Although precise amounts remain uncertain, travel could become dangerous, particularly during the weekend.

Residents and travelers in Iron, Dickinson, Menominee, and Schoolcraft counties are urged to monitor updated forecasts and avoid venturing onto frozen waterways, which may no longer support weight safely. Authorities stress that even areas with thick ice earlier in the season may now be unstable.

To stay safe, the public is advised to avoid all recreational ice activities, secure emergency supplies in vehicles, and plan for slower travel during potential snow or ice events.
