Duluth, MN — A winter storm watch is in effect for portions of northeastern Minnesota, with freezing rain, snow, and strong winds forecast from late Thursday night through early Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the impacted region includes Duluth, Hibbing, Grand Marais, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors. Up to four inches of snow and a quarter inch of ice are possible. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph, contributing to potentially hazardous road conditions and limited visibility.

The alert, which begins at 1 a.m. Friday and extends through 6 a.m. Saturday, affects Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties. The Tribal Lands of the Grand Portage Reservation, Fond du Lac Band, and Bois Forte Band—including the Lake Vermilion area—are also under the watch. Portions of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are included as well.

Drivers should expect slippery roads during Friday morning and evening commutes. Officials urge residents to monitor forecasts and delay unnecessary travel if conditions worsen.

Residents are encouraged to prepare emergency kits in vehicles, charge electronic devices, and allow extra time for travel. Power outages are possible in areas experiencing ice accumulation and high winds.
