ST. IGNACE, Mich. – Motorists traveling on I-75 in Mackinac County should prepare for lane reductions as a major overpass reconstruction project begins March 31. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing $9 million in the Cheeseman Road overpass project, which is expected to last until November 6, 2026.

According to MDOT, the project includes deck and bearing replacement, substructure repairs, beam end repairs, and steel cleaning and coating. Work will be completed in phases, with northbound I-75 improvements expected to finish in 2025 and southbound construction concluding in 2026. No work will occur during winter shutdown periods.

During construction, traffic in both directions will be reduced to one lane. Northbound traffic will be shifted to the southbound side using temporary crossovers, while two-way traffic will be managed with concrete barrier walls. A 12-foot lane width restriction will be in effect, and the speed limit will be reduced to 60 mph, or 45 mph in active work zones.

MDOT estimates the project will directly and indirectly support 86 jobs. Officials say the improvements will enhance safety for motorists and extend the lifespan of the roadway.
