Grand Rapids, MI – The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is warning Michigan residents about a recent phone scam targeting citizens under the guise of missed jury duty.
Scammers are calling individuals, falsely identifying themselves as “Lt. Thome” from the Sheriff’s Office. Callers tell residents they’ve missed jury duty and now owe a fine to avoid arrest. The scammers then pressure victims into paying immediately over the phone.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that it will never call to collect fines or threaten arrest for missed jury duty. If residents receive a suspicious call like this, officials urge them to contact the Sheriff’s Office directly instead of paying any “fines.”
Officials remind the public to remain cautious of unexpected calls demanding payment or sensitive information. Scams like these often use scare tactics to trick people into paying quickly, bypassing rational thinking.
Residents should share this information with family and friends to help prevent further scams in the area.
