Ann Arbor, Michigan – Fire crews raced across Ann Arbor overnight as more than 40 separate fires broke out during celebrations following the University of Michigan’s national championship win.

According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department, crews responded to dozens of incidents between late Sunday night and the early morning hours Monday as crowds gathered across the city. Many of the fires involved discarded furniture, including couches and debris, set ablaze in streets and public areas.

Despite the حجم of calls, officials say quick response times prevented flames from spreading to nearby homes or vehicles. Firefighters worked multiple scenes at once, with support from the Michigan State Police Aviation Unit, which assisted in identifying and locating fires from above. The Ann Arbor Police Department also managed crowd control as large groups filled neighborhoods near campus.

The celebrations followed Michigan’s 69-63 win over UConn in the NCAA men’s basketball championship, marking the program’s first national title since 1989. The victory sparked widespread gatherings, particularly in student-heavy areas.

Officials confirmed no serious injuries and no major property damage, though they called the number of fires significant. Authorities continue to review the incidents and remind residents that setting fires in public spaces is illegal and dangerous.

More updates could follow as the city assesses damage and any potential charges tied to the overnight activity.
