Gaylord, Mich. – Sweltering heat and humidity are gripping Northern Lower Michigan this weekend, with heat indices expected to soar as high as 104 degrees through Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for more than 20 counties—including Emmet, Cheboygan, Grand Traverse, Alpena, and Charlevoix—until 8 p.m. Monday. Daytime highs in the lower to mid-90s combined with muggy overnight lows in the 70s will create hazardous conditions, especially for vulnerable populations.

Communities from Traverse City to Oscoda should expect oppressive afternoon heat both Sunday and Monday, with limited relief after sunset. The prolonged heat could strain power grids, impact outdoor events, and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and check on elderly neighbors or those without access to air conditioning. OSHA recommends frequent breaks and shaded areas for outdoor workers.

This marks one of the most intense early-summer heat events in recent memory for the region. The advisory may be extended if conditions persist into Tuesday.

Stay tuned for updates as the heat wave continues across Northern Michigan.
