Fort Wayne, Ind. – Northern Indiana is entering its first major heat wave of the summer, with heat index values expected to soar as high as 105 degrees through Tuesday evening, while overnight lows offer little relief.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday, followed by an Extreme Heat Watch from Sunday morning through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Affected areas include counties across northern Indiana, southwestern Michigan, and northwestern Ohio.

Residents in cities like South Bend, Fort Wayne, and Elkhart can expect stifling humidity and low temperatures that may not dip below 75 degrees at night. The prolonged heat could significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for seniors, children, and those without reliable air conditioning.

Outdoor workers are urged to take frequent shaded breaks and stay hydrated. Emergency officials recommend checking on vulnerable neighbors, limiting outdoor activity during peak heat, and ensuring pets have cool shelter.

This early-season heat wave could strain power grids and challenge cooling centers. Municipalities may issue additional advisories or open cooling stations as conditions worsen.

The Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday, and more updates are expected as temperatures climb.
