Michigan City, IN – A Michigan City couple is facing serious charges after their 7-week-old infant was hospitalized with injuries suspected to be the result of abuse. Kaitlyn M. Wiessert, 23, and Kyle A. Hollihan, 26, both of Michigan City, were arrested on April 2 after a months-long investigation into the child’s condition.
Deputy Xavier Biggerstaff responded to a report at Franciscan Health – Michigan City Campus on February 3, where the infant was being treated for severe injuries. The child was later transported to a regional children’s hospital due to the extent of the injuries. Detective Derrick Deck took over the case the following day, leading to Wiessert and Hollihan being identified as suspects in the abuse.
According to authorities, an investigation by Detective Deck was presented to the La Porte County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which resulted in charges being filed. On March 25, a Superior Court I judge found probable cause to charge the couple with multiple felony offenses. Both Wiessert and Hollihan were arrested after warrants were issued.
Wiessert is charged with Domestic Battery (Class 3 Felony) and Neglect Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (Class 3 Felony). Hollihan faces the same charges, along with an additional Domestic Battery (Class 5 Felony) and Neglect (Class 5 Felony) charge. Both individuals are currently being held at the La Porte County Jail on $25,000 cash-only bonds.
The case has drawn attention from local authorities and support organizations, including the Indiana Department of Child Services and Dunebrook, Inc.
