Marquette, Michigan – Strong winds are creating life-threatening conditions along Lake Michigan beaches in Schoolcraft County today, with dangerous waves and currents prompting urgent safety warnings.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a High Swim Risk is in effect for all Schoolcraft County beaches on Tuesday, June 3. The most hazardous areas include Lakeview Park in Manistique and Seul Choix Point, where wind-driven waves are producing dangerous rip currents and pounding surf.
Officials are urging residents and visitors to stay out of the water and avoid structures like piers and breakwalls, which can amplify the danger. Even experienced swimmers are at risk, and rescue operations can be hindered by rough lake conditions.
The warning comes as early summer activities ramp up across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where unseasonably strong winds have turned popular beaches hazardous. Similar warnings were issued last year during early June wind events that caused multiple rescue calls.
Stay updated through local alerts and avoid all swimming and wading today. Conditions are expected to improve by late Tuesday evening
