Merrillville, IN – A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle late Thursday evening in Merrillville, Indiana, and is currently in critical condition after the crash.

According to the Merrillville Police Department, officers were dispatched to Eastbound US 30 near Connecticut Street at approximately 10:40 p.m. Thursday, where they found the individual with significant head injuries and possible broken bones from the collision.

The subject was treated by local medics and the Merrillville Fire Department before being transported to a nearby hospital. Due to the severity of the injuries, the pedestrian was later flown to a hospital in the Chicago area.

The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene and provided officers with information. Police are now conducting an investigation into the crash, and the identity of the pedestrian will be released at a later time pending family notification.

The Merrillville Police Department is urging the public to avoid crossing highways like US 30 unless absolutely necessary. Pedestrians are encouraged to cross only at well-lit intersections when it is safe to do so.

The investigation remains ongoing.
