Greenfield, Mass. – Snowfall rates are intensifying across western Massachusetts early Monday, with up to 10 inches expected and wind gusts reaching 55 mph before the storm tapers early Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday for Franklin County and western Hampshire County, including Greenfield, Orange, Charlemont and Chesterfield. An additional 7 to 10 inches of snow will pile up through the overnight hours, while powerful wind gusts could produce blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.

Roads across Routes 2, 5 and 91 are becoming snow-covered, especially in higher elevations near Charlemont and along the Mohawk Trail. Blowing snow may lower visibility to under a half mile at times, making travel hazardous during both the Monday evening commute and the early Tuesday drive. Strong winds combined with heavy, wet snow could snap tree limbs and cause scattered power outages.

Drivers should delay nonessential travel, pack emergency supplies and check 511 for updated road conditions. The warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday, and additional advisories could follow if strong wind gusts continue after snowfall ends.
