Scranton, Pa. – Snow-covered highways and wind gusts up to 45 mph are cutting visibility below a quarter mile across northeast Pennsylvania and parts of southern New York, creating dangerous travel conditions through early afternoon Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday for Lackawanna and Luzerne counties, including Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton. The warning also covers Northern Wayne and Wyoming counties in Pennsylvania and Delaware County in New York. An additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected, while persistent north-northwest winds will continue gusting as high as 45 mph.
Blowing and drifting snow are rapidly reducing visibility along Interstates 81 and 84, as well as Route 6 near Tunkhannock and Route 209 near Hazleton. Bridges and overpasses are especially slick, and untreated secondary roads remain snow-packed. PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission urge motorists to delay unnecessary travel and check 511PA.com for the latest restrictions and road conditions. In New York, drivers can call 511 for updates.
Officials advise carrying emergency supplies and allowing extra stopping distance if travel is unavoidable. The warning remains in effect until 1 p.m., with gradual improvement expected later this afternoon as winds ease.
