A significant winter storm continues to impact Maryland, northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia, with heavy snowfall expected to last until early Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Storm Warning predicting total snow accumulations between 5 to 10 inches, with localized amounts up to 16 inches possible in areas experiencing heavy snow banding.

According to the NWS, snowfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour are expected to create hazardous travel conditions starting Monday morning. A second round of snow Monday evening could exacerbate the situation before tapering off by Tuesday at 1 a.m.

Areas across western Maryland and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia may see accumulations up to 24 inches. Ice accumulations remain a concern, with up to one-tenth of an inch possible south of Interstate 64. Winds are expected to gust as high as 35 mph in some regions, further complicating travel.

Residents are strongly advised to delay non-essential travel. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight. For the latest road conditions, travelers can call 511 in their state.

Stay tuned for updates as the storm continues to develop.
