Hagerstown, Md. – Dangerously high heat will grip parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia through Monday, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 107 degrees in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory goes into effect from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, impacting Washington County in Maryland, Shenandoah Valley counties in Virginia, and Berkeley and Jefferson counties in West Virginia. That will be followed by an Extreme Heat Watch for Monday, from late morning through the evening, as even hotter conditions develop.
Communities including Hagerstown, Winchester, Front Royal, and Martinsburg should prepare for stifling humidity and limited cooling overnight. Outdoor workers and vulnerable residents are at elevated risk for heat-related illness.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, drink water frequently, and check on elderly neighbors. Those without reliable cooling are encouraged to seek out local cooling centers or air-conditioned public spaces.
The heat wave could expand or intensify. Additional advisories may follow as Monday’s threat becomes clearer.
