Springfield, Ill. – Dangerous heat will grip central and southeast Illinois through Tuesday evening, with heat index values soaring to 106°, creating a serious risk of heat-related illness.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday across more than 40 counties, including Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, Decatur, and Effingham. Overnight lows will remain in the mid-70s, offering little relief—especially in homes without air conditioning.

Residents in Springfield, Urbana, and surrounding areas should limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration urges outdoor workers to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and stay hydrated.

This prolonged stretch of high humidity and extreme temperatures is typical of late-June heat waves in Illinois, but the extended nature of this one raises concern. Communities like Danville, Mattoon, and Lawrenceville may experience several days of oppressive conditions that could strain cooling centers and healthcare services.

Heat-related warnings remain in effect through Tuesday, with potential for extension if conditions persist. Stay informed via local alerts and check on vulnerable neighbors and family members.
