Baltimore, Md. – Heavy rain could flood roads and low-lying areas across Maryland and the D.C. region starting Friday evening, as a slow-moving storm system dumps 2 to 4 inches of rain in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch is in effect from Friday evening through late Friday night for the District of Columbia, most of central Maryland, and parts of northern Virginia. The alert includes Baltimore, Prince George’s, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, and Frederick counties, along with Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun in Virginia.

The region may see multiple rounds of thunderstorms with locally heavy downpours. Excessive runoff could lead to flash flooding of streams, creeks, and poor-drainage roads—especially in urban areas. Rainfall totals may reach up to 4 inches in isolated spots, with the heaviest showers expected between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. Saturday.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and check for closures before traveling. Residents should secure basement belongings, charge electronics, and monitor alerts in case Flash Flood Warnings are issued.

Conditions are expected to improve by Saturday morning, but more advisories may follow if rainfall rates increase overnight.
