Marquette, MI – Forecasters warn that a strengthening storm system will sweep through the Upper Great Lakes Wednesday, bringing heavy snow and strong winds that could create hazardous travel conditions across Upper Michigan, according to the National Weather Service in Marquette.
The main window for impactful weather is Wednesday into Wednesday night, with the heaviest snow and strongest winds expected across the Keweenaw Peninsula and areas near Lake Superior. Travel disruptions are likely, especially for those driving ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Moderate to potentially heavy lake-effect snow showers are forecast to continue into Thanksgiving Day, particularly in the northwest wind snow belts, before slowly tapering by Friday.
“This storm is anticipated to impact Thanksgiving travel, especially west of Marquette into northern Wisconsin and the Arrowhead of Minnesota,” the NWS said Sunday. “Those with travel plans should be prepared to adjust based on changing conditions.”
Rain will begin to spread over the region Monday night and Tuesday before transitioning to snow late Tuesday as temperatures fall behind the cold front.
