Marquette, Michigan – Gusty north to northwest winds are pushing wildfire smoke back across Upper Michigan today, reducing air quality while also creating dangerous swimming conditions along Lake Superior. Dry weather will continue through Sunday, but a more active weather pattern is expected to return early next week with showers and thunderstorms, including the potential for a few severe storms.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, wildfire smoke will persist across the Upper Peninsula through the weekend as winds transport additional smoke into the region. Residents with respiratory conditions should monitor air quality updates from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), as air quality may deteriorate throughout the day.
The same gusty winds will create hazardous waves and currents along portions of the Lake Superior shoreline, increasing the risk for swimmers. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water where dangerous conditions exist and pay close attention to local beach advisories.
Communities including Marquette, Munising, Houghton, Ironwood, Escanaba, Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas will experience smoky skies through Sunday. High temperatures will range from 67 to 80 degrees today and 74 to 84 degrees Sunday before warmer air arrives Monday.
The pattern changes on Monday, when showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the Upper Peninsula. Some storms could become severe Monday into Tuesday, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall.
Residents with outdoor plans this weekend should continue monitoring air quality conditions and stay updated on the developing thunderstorm threat as the new week begins.
