South Bend, Indiana – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across northern Indiana this afternoon, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts, isolated large hail and localized flooding during the peak travel hours. The greatest threat is expected between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. EDT, when storms could rapidly intensify as they move across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, much of the area is under a Marginal to Enhanced Risk for severe thunderstorms today. A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) covers much of northern Indiana, while areas near the Ohio border are included in an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5). Forecasters say the primary hazard will be wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, although isolated large hail and localized flooding from torrential downpours are also possible. The tornado threat remains low.

Communities including South Bend, Elkhart, Goshen, Warsaw, Plymouth, La Porte, Logansport, Fort Wayne and Angola could experience rapidly changing weather this afternoon. Drivers along Interstates 80/90, 69 and 94 should be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility, ponding water on roadways and debris from strong wind gusts.

Residents should secure outdoor furniture and other loose objects before storms develop and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows. Never drive through flooded roadways, as heavy rain can quickly make travel hazardous.

The severe weather threat will gradually diminish this evening as storms move east, but additional warnings may be issued throughout the afternoon as thunderstorms strengthen across northern Indiana.
