Miami, Florida – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across South Florida late this morning and continue through the afternoon, bringing the potential for torrential rainfall, strong wind gusts, frequent lightning and isolated small hail. The greatest coverage of storms is expected inland, where slow-moving downpours could create hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, showers and thunderstorms will increase from late morning into the afternoon as sea breeze boundaries move inland. While not every community will see rain, the strongest storms could produce heavy downpours capable of causing localized street flooding, along with wind gusts strong enough to down tree limbs and scatter unsecured outdoor items.

The highest storm chances will be across inland portions of Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Collier and Hendry counties, though storms may also drift toward communities including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Naples, Homestead and Weston later in the day. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning will pose a significant hazard for anyone at beaches, parks or outdoor events.

Afternoon temperatures will reach around 91 degrees in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, with Naples expected to top out near 90 degrees before thunderstorms provide localized cooling.

Residents should keep a close eye on the sky if spending time outdoors and move indoors immediately when thunder is heard. Never drive through flooded roadways, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions during the afternoon commute.

Additional showers and thunderstorms may continue into the evening before gradually diminishing. Monitor updates from the National Weather Service for any severe thunderstorm or flood advisories that may be issued.
