Paducah, Kentucky – Oppressive heat and humidity will continue to grip western Kentucky and the surrounding Four-State region through Tuesday, with afternoon heat index values climbing well into the triple digits before a cold front finally delivers cooler weather by the middle of next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, afternoon heat index values will range from 98 to around 105 degrees through Monday, with many communities expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees on Tuesday. High temperatures will generally remain in the upper 80s to lower 90s, while warm overnight lows in the 70s will offer little relief from the persistent humidity.
The hottest conditions are expected across Paducah, Murray, Mayfield, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, Henderson, Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar Bluff, Marion, Owensboro and Evansville, where prolonged outdoor activity could quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Residents without air conditioning, older adults, young children and outdoor workers face the greatest risk.
Officials recommend drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight clothing and limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon and early evening. Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
Relief is on the way as a cold front moves through the region late Tuesday. High temperatures are expected to fall back into the 80s from Wednesday through Friday, bringing more comfortable conditions after several days of dangerous heat.
