Indianapolis, IN โ€“ A homicide investigation on Indianapolisโ€™ north side led to a quick arrest Sunday evening after a man was found fatally shot inside a vehicle.

According to IMPD, officers were dispatched around 7:00 p.m. Sunday to the 3800 block of North Mitthoefer Road in Marion County following reports of a person shot. When officers arrived, they located 39-year-old Aaron Smith suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Police say 44-year-old Erick Alvarez was identified as the suspect and taken into custody less than an hour after the shooting. According to investigators, officers at the scene worked quickly to gather information from multiple cooperating witnesses, which helped lead to the arrest.

IMPD homicide detectives continued canvassing the area for surveillance video and additional evidence while speaking with witnesses. Authorities say the investigation remains active as they work to piece together the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

Alvarez has been arrested in connection with Smithโ€™s death, though formal charges may still be pending. According to police, any arrest is merely an accusation, and Alvarez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

The case remains under investigation by IMPD Homicide. Officials have not yet released additional details about a possible motive.
