Indianapolis, IN – A 20-year-old suspect is now in custody in connection with a 2022 fatal shooting on the city’s east side, following a coordinated effort between local and county law enforcement.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) arrested Caleb Hill on Saturday, May 3, 2026, for his alleged role in the shooting death of 34-year-old Gregory Newsome Jr.

Police say the incident dates back to Friday, September 12, 2025, just after 1 a.m., when officers were dispatched to the 6200 block of East 11th Street on reports of a person shot. Officers found Newsome Jr. suffering from gunshot wounds and provided aid until Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services arrived. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

According to police, detectives identified Hill as the suspect following an investigation that included locating a crime scene and evidence in the 6200 block of Eastridge Drive. A warrant for Hill’s arrest was issued on February 20, 2026.

On May 3, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office received a tip regarding Hill’s location and worked alongside IMPD VCU to locate and arrest him the same day. Authorities say Hill was taken into custody on the murder warrant and additional domestic violence-related warrants.

Officials emphasize that the charges are allegations, and Hill is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
