Portland, ME – A 78-year-old woman was stopped by police early Monday after driving the wrong way on Interstate 295 in Portland. Just before midnight, Maine State Police began receiving reports of a vehicle going northbound in the southbound lanes between exits 7 and 8.
Yarmouth Rescue, en route to another emergency, spotted the 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser driving in the wrong direction. The ambulance turned around, positioning itself at an angle to block the vehicle. The woman, attempting to reach Mercy Hospital, began reversing when she saw the ambulance.
A state trooper quickly arrived, activated his emergency lights, and stopped her vehicle. He then approached the driver, who was experiencing a medical event, and secured her keys. Yarmouth Rescue transported the woman to Mercy Hospital for further evaluation.
The Maine Department of Transportation and Portland Police also responded, ensuring the roadway was safe for other drivers. Officials have not released further details on the woman’s condition.
