Caribou, ME – A messy mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is set to sweep across Maine beginning Wednesday night, bringing potentially hazardous conditions through Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, light snow is expected to start late Wednesday night and continue into early Thursday morning. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are forecast, with the heaviest snowfall projected in areas such as Patten, Greenville, and Mt. Katahdin.

As Thursday progresses, snow will transition to sleet and freezing rain moving northward across the state. Areas in the Central Highlands and Northern Maine face the highest risk of icing, with up to 0.25 inches of ice possible in some locations. The potential for slippery roads and limited visibility could impact both the Thursday morning and evening commutes.

By Thursday afternoon, most precipitation is expected to change to rain before tapering off into scattered showers by evening. South winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, may further complicate travel.

Residents are urged to use caution while driving and to monitor local alerts. Prepare for delays and check with schools and workplaces regarding potential changes due to weather conditions.
