Bozeman, MT – A powerful winter storm is sweeping across southwest Montana, dropping heavy snow across mountain regions and valleys and making travel increasingly hazardous through early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Great Falls, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. MDT Wednesday for the Gallatin Valley, Big Belt, Bridger and Castle Mountains, and the Gallatin and Madison County Mountains. Snow accumulations are expected to reach 3 to 7 inches in the Gallatin Valley, with 10 to 18 inches forecast for elevations above mountain passes.
Travel in and around Bozeman, West Yellowstone, and Big Sky could be significantly impacted, especially during morning and evening commutes. Tire chains may be required, and officials urge drivers to use caution and avoid unnecessary travel.
Snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour during peak periods Tuesday morning. Areas such as Bozeman Pass, Battle Ridge Pass, and Targhee Pass are likely to experience the heaviest accumulations.
Residents are advised to keep emergency supplies in vehicles, including food, water, and flashlights. Backcountry users should prepare for dangerous and rapidly changing conditions.
