Caribou, Maine – Northern and central Maine will bake under hazy sunshine and highs in the mid-80s Wednesday before a surge of humidity and strong thunderstorms arrives Thursday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, today will remain mostly sunny with haze from Canadian wildfire smoke, especially across interior regions. A cold front approaching from the west will begin to stir the atmosphere on Thursday, triggering thunderstorms from north to south by midday. Gusty winds, heavy downpours, and small hail are possible in stronger cells—particularly in Southern Piscataquis, Penobscot, and Aroostook counties.
Storms are expected to hold off near the coast, where sea breezes may suppress convection. Highs on Thursday will soar into the upper 80s to low 90s across southern interior areas, with dew points climbing into the sticky 60s. Overnight lows tonight will drop into the 40s along the coast and 50s inland.
Residents should be prepared for rapidly changing weather Thursday afternoon and stay indoors during storms. Lake and river temperatures remain cold—use flotation devices and stay near shore if boating.
Another round of showers is possible Saturday, with clearer skies likely returning Sunday.
