Caribou, ME — Residents in northern Maine should prepare for icy roadways, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures as winter weather intensifies this weekend. Forecasters warn of slick travel conditions, particularly along Route 1, where patchy blowing snow could reduce visibility through Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, temperatures will remain well below normal through Monday, with daytime highs struggling to reach the low teens. Gusty west winds, exceeding 30 mph at times, will create wind chills as low as -2°F Friday night and into Saturday morning. Travel conditions could worsen overnight as wind-driven snow combines with freezing temperatures.

A slight chance of snow showers persists through the weekend, though significant accumulation is not expected. Saturday’s high will reach around 16°F, with winds calming slightly to 7–9 mph. Sunday offers a brief reprieve with sunny skies, but highs will peak at a frigid 13°F, while overnight temperatures plunge to single digits.

Looking ahead, unseasonably cold weather will persist into early next week. Monday will bring clearer skies, but daytime highs will remain in the 20°F range, with a chance of light snow Monday night.

Drivers should exercise caution, especially on untreated roads. Check local updates before heading out and bundle up to protect against frostbite risks in the bitter wind chills.
