Bangor, Maine — A widespread rain event will intensify overnight Saturday and continue through Sunday evening, with periods of steady rainfall leading to water pooling and slower travel across eastern Maine from late Saturday night through Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, rain will expand after 10 p.m. Saturday and become steady between midnight and 6 a.m. Sunday. The heaviest rainfall is expected from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, when totals may reach 0.5 to 1.5 inches, especially across Bangor, Bar Harbor, Calais, Machias and Ellsworth.

Road impacts will increase quickly Sunday morning as rain falls on already damp ground, leading to pooling on I-95, U.S. 1 and Route 9. Low-lying roads, underpasses and poor drainage areas in coastal and Downeast communities may see water buildup within minutes during heavier bursts, reducing visibility and increasing hydroplaning risk.

This is part of a broader coastal system tracking offshore, pulling Atlantic moisture into eastern Maine while keeping temperatures cool and limiting evaporation.

Drivers should slow down on wet roads, avoid water-covered streets and allow extra stopping distance during periods of steady rain. Outdoor plans should be adjusted to account for prolonged wet conditions.

The heaviest impacts will occur from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, when steady rain will produce the most significant roadway flooding and travel slowdowns.
