Limerick, ME – A Limerick man was arrested early Sunday after an overnight police pursuit that crossed into New Hampshire and ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed into the woods, according to Maine State Police.
According to Maine State Police, shortly after midnight on Sunday, July 12, 2026, a state trooper stopped to check on a suspicious vehicle parked at the Alpha Sports Center in Limerick after noticing the business was closed and the driver appeared to be slumped over the steering wheel.
Officials said when the trooper knocked on the vehicle’s window, the driver allegedly sped out of the parking lot onto Route 5, prompting a pursuit. During the chase, authorities allege the vehicle struck a Maine State Police cruiser.
The pursuit continued through Limerick and Newfield, Maine, before crossing into Wakefield, New Hampshire. Shortly after entering Wakefield, the vehicle reportedly left the roadway and crashed into the woods. Police said the driver fled on foot but was taken into custody a short time later.
Authorities identified the driver as James King, 36, of Limerick. According to Maine State Police, King has been charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, eluding an officer, and passing a roadblock. Officials said additional charges are expected.
King suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported to the Carroll County Jail in New Hampshire. Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the incident.
No troopers were injured. The investigation remains ongoing.
As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
