Springfield, IL – Macy’s has confirmed plans to close 66 stores in 2025, including the White Oaks Mall location in Springfield. The closures are part of Macy’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy to streamline operations and boost profitability.

According to Macy’s CEO Tony Spring, the company is targeting underperforming locations while reallocating resources to enhance its stronger stores.

The Illinois closure is one of several across the Midwest, with Minnesota losing two stores and Michigan seeing four closures. Ohio will also face the loss of one location. Nationwide, states like California, Florida, and New York will experience the largest number of shutdowns.

Macy’s aims to reinvest in its remaining 350 stores, with improvements planned through fiscal year 2026. These investments focus on elevating the customer experience, including enhanced product offerings and digital innovations.

Since the launch of its transformation plan in 2024, Macy’s has reported three consecutive quarters of sales growth in its pilot stores, alongside improved customer satisfaction scores. This strategy reflects the retailer’s commitment to balancing in-store and online shopping experiences.

The closures highlight the challenges faced by department stores in today’s competitive retail landscape. Macy’s efforts to adapt include expanding digital services and reimagining store layouts to meet evolving customer needs.

Springfield shoppers impacted by the closure can find a list of go-forward stores and services on macys.com.
