Lyon County Flood Alert: K-99 Flooding as Cottonwood River Near Emporia Rises to 26.2 Feet by Thursday Afternoon

Emporia, Kansas – Highway K-99 near Emporia is facing moderate flooding as the Cottonwood River crests at 26.2 feet, well above flood stage.

According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, moderate flooding is ongoing along both the Cottonwood and Neosho Rivers in Lyon County, with flood warnings extended until further notice. As of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Cottonwood River measured 25.4 feet and continues rising. The south bank of K-99 begins to flood at 24 feet, and the north bank at 25.5 feet.

Water has already inundated low-lying areas between Plymouth and Neosho Rapids, and levels are expected to rise through early Thursday afternoon. At 26.5 feet, floodwaters could reach the low steel of the Old K-99 bridge.

Residents near the river should avoid travel through flooded areas, charge mobile devices, and monitor local alerts. Emergency officials warn that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

Flood warnings will remain in effect until water levels recede. Updates will be issued as river conditions change.
