Santa Rosa, N.M. – Strong thunderstorms are moving across eastern New Mexico Wednesday evening, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in five counties, including Curry, San Miguel, Harding, Quay and Guadalupe, until 11 p.m. MDT. Residents could see damaging wind gusts, hail, and dangerous lightning.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Watch #365 was issued at 6:10 p.m. MDT, covering Curry, Guadalupe, Harding, Quay, and San Miguel counties. The greatest risk period stretches into the late evening hours as instability and moisture increase across the High Plains.

Localized power outages and minor wind damage are possible, particularly in exposed areas near Clovis, Tucumcari, and Las Vegas. US-54 and I-40 travelers should monitor for rapidly changing conditions, including sudden downpours and reduced visibility.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, stay indoors during storms, and keep mobile alerts enabled. High-profile vehicles should avoid travel during peak wind periods, especially on east-west highways. Additional watches or warnings may follow if storms continue to strengthen or move east into Texas overnight.
