Louisiana – Dark clouds are already building over parts of northwest Louisiana, and wet pavement could become a common sight before the day is over. Keep the umbrella close. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop through the afternoon, bringing periods of heavy rain before the region turns noticeably hotter later this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, rain chances increase to 70 percent today, with showers likely and thunderstorms possible before and after the afternoon hours. High temperatures will reach around 86 degrees, and some locations could pick up up to one-half inch of rainfall, with locally higher totals under stronger storms.
Motorists along Interstate 20, Interstate 49, U.S. 71 and U.S. 79 should prepare for changing road conditions. Brief heavy rain may reduce visibility and create ponding on highways during heavier downpours. Plan extra travel time if you’re heading out this afternoon, especially during periods of lightning and heavier rainfall.
The unsettled pattern continues Tuesday with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and highs near 88 degrees. By Wednesday, scattered afternoon storms remain possible as temperatures climb to 90 degrees. The atmosphere gradually dries out Thursday, allowing sunshine to return and temperatures to rise into the lower 90s. By Friday and the weekend, highs surge into the mid to upper 90s, signaling a return to typical midsummer heat.
National weather discussions continue to highlight a corridor of heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms across portions of the Plains and Midwest. While the greatest severe weather threat remains north of Louisiana, locally heavy rain and frequent lightning will be the primary concerns around Shreveport today.
If thunder roars, head indoors. Avoid flooded roadways, slow down during heavy rain, and keep an eye on changing radar trends throughout the afternoon.
The Climate Prediction Center continues to favor above-normal temperatures in the 6-to-10-day outlook, suggesting the hotter summer pattern will likely persist into next week.
