Kentucky – Fog is slowly lifting across western Kentucky, revealing blue skies that will quickly give way to another warm and increasingly humid summer afternoon. While the morning commute improves, attention shifts toward rising temperatures and the return of scattered thunderstorms later this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, today remains mainly sunny with a high near 88 degrees after early fog dissipates. A Hazardous Weather Outlook is in effect across western Kentucky, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana and southeast Missouri. While widespread severe weather is not expected today, isolated thunderstorms remain possible over portions of the southern Pennyrile this afternoon, with scattered afternoon storms becoming a recurring pattern through much of the week.
The quiet weather today won’t last. Tuesday brings another sunny start before a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops between early and mid-afternoon, with highs reaching 89 degrees. By Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures climb to 90 and 91 degrees, while isolated afternoon storms continue to develop during peak heating.
Motorists along Interstate 24, Interstate 69, U.S. 60 and the Julian Carroll Purchase Parkway should be prepared for sudden downpours and brief reductions in visibility if a storm develops nearby. Most locations will remain dry, but any thunderstorm could produce lightning and locally heavy rainfall.
National weather discussions continue to highlight the potential for severe storms and flash flooding across parts of the Plains and Midwest. Those stronger systems are expected to remain well northwest of Paducah for now, though locally scattered storms will still require attention during the afternoon hours.
Plan outdoor activities during the morning whenever possible and keep an eye on radar before heading to parks, ballfields or area lakes. Even isolated thunderstorms can develop quickly in the summer heat.
The Climate Prediction Center continues to favor above-normal temperatures during the 6-to-10-day outlook, suggesting western Kentucky’s summer warmth is likely to continue into next week.
