Lombard, IL – Drivers in Lombard will need to plan alternate routes starting this week as a major intersection closes for nearly a month due to ongoing infrastructure work.

According to the Village of Lombard, crews began full closure of South Elizabeth Street at West Hickory Street on Thursday as part of the Large Diameter Combined Sewer Rehabilitation Project. The closure is expected to last until June 15, though favorable weather could allow for earlier completion.

The project utilizes trenchless technology to minimize surface disruption but still requires access to underground infrastructure via existing manholes, including those in active roadways. This phase includes work in the rear yards of the Green Valley Subdivision, bordered by Hickory, Washington, Park, and Elizabeth Streets.

A posted detour directs northbound traffic on Elizabeth to bypass the closure via West Madison Street and North Westmore Avenue. Southbound traffic will be rerouted using West Ann Street and North Main Street. Local access for residents will be maintained, although limited restrictions may occur while materials are being delivered to the work zone.

The Village advises that the closure and detour took effect May 21. Residents can receive updates through the village’s Notify Me system at www.villageoflombard.org/list.aspx?ListID=260. More details, including the detour map, are available at www.villageoflombard.org/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=939.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and observe posted signage in the area throughout the construction period.
