Darien, IL – A fatal crash on I-55 near Cass Avenue in DuPage County has shut down mainline southbound lanes, prompting traffic to be diverted and causing significant delays.
According to Illinois State Police Troop 3, the incident occurred earlier today and led to a complete closure of all southbound mainline lanes as of approximately 2:45 p.m. Troopers are actively investigating the crash, which occurred on the southbound side of I-55.
Authorities reported that the ramps from IL-83 southbound to I-55 southbound and from IL-83 northbound to I-55 southbound are also closed and will remain shut down for an extended period. Drivers are being advised to seek alternate routes and exercise caution in the area.
While the I-55 southbound mainline is expected to remain open eventually, officials have emphasized the importance of slowing down and moving over for emergency responders working on the scene. The cause of the crash and the identity of the victim have not been released at this time.
