Logansport, IN – A two-vehicle collision on US 35 late Tuesday night resulted in injuries to both drivers and a temporary closure of the roadway. The incident occurred around 11:51 PM at the intersection of County Road 550 North and US 35.
According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Derrick Legrand of Royal Center, IN, was driving southbound on US 35 when he hydroplaned during heavy rain. His 2015 Infiniti Q50 crossed the center line and was struck by a 2012 Chevrolet SUV driven by 29-year-old Cassie Hurlburt of Winamac, IN. Legrand was transported to IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette with non-life-threatening injuries, while Hurlburt sustained serious injuries and was taken to Logansport Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Driver restraint systems mitigated the injuries. Authorities believe weather and alcohol consumption were contributing factors. Information regarding possible criminal charges against Legrand will be forwarded to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.
Both vehicles suffered substantial damage and were towed from the scene. US 35 was closed for about one and a half hours for investigation and cleanup. The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Cass County Sheriff’s Office at 574-753-7800.
