Lockport, IL – The Lockport Police Department announced the results of its yearlong traffic safety crackdown, part of the Federal Fiscal Year 2025 Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). Conducted between Oct. 1, 2024, and Sept. 30, 2025, the initiative aimed to reduce crashes and save lives through stricter enforcement and education campaigns.

According to police, officers made 1,297 traffic stops, issued 1,353 citations, and made 22 arrests during the enforcement period. The citations included 663 speeding violations, 338 seat belt offenses, and 125 electronic device use citations. Additionally, officers made 4 DUI arrests, 18 traffic arrests, 2 criminal arrests, and issued 205 other traffic-related citations.

Police said the campaign was part of broader efforts to promote safe driving under state and federal programs such as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Click It or Ticket,” and “Drive High, Get a DUI.”

“The goal of this enforcement was to make our roads safer for everyone,” the department said in a statement. “By focusing on the leading causes of crashes—speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and failure to wear seat belts—we aimed to save lives and remind drivers that violating traffic laws will not be tolerated.”

The STEP grant was funded by federal highway safety funds administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of a statewide push to reduce traffic-related fatalities.
