Lake County, Illinois – A countywide donation drive supporting thousands of local veterans and their families is officially underway, with dozens of drop-off locations open throughout May.

According to the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center, the 2026 Operation Dropbox campaign runs from Thursday, May 1 through May 31, collecting essential items to benefit more than 3,000 veterans through the Veterans Path to Hope program.

Donation sites are spread across Lake County, including communities such as Waukegan, Gurnee, Libertyville, Grayslake, Highland Park, and Zion, as well as smaller municipalities like Round Lake, Vernon Hills, and Lake Barrington. Many locations include fire departments, police stations, libraries, and government buildings, making access convenient for residents across the region.

Officials say the drive is focused on collecting new, unused items. Requested donations include canned goods like soups, chili, and vegetables; pantry staples such as peanut butter, pasta, and cereal; and personal care products like shampoo, soap, and toothpaste. Household essentials—including paper products, garbage bags, and basic cookware—are also accepted.

Organizers emphasize that clothing and used items will not be accepted, with the exception of new, plastic-wrapped pillows. Donors are also encouraged to check expiration dates on all food items before dropping them off.

The annual effort plays a critical role in supporting veterans facing financial hardship, helping supply food, hygiene items, and basic living necessities throughout the year.

Residents can find a full list of donation sites and accepted items through Lake County’s official website as the month-long drive continues.
