Tragedy Strikes: East Chicago Police Investigate Fatal Shooting, Person of Interest in Custody

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – Police responded to a shooting at 2105 Joy Lane early Friday, that claimed the life of 86-year-old Ernest West Sr. and left his son, 50-year-old Ernest West Jr., injured with a gunshot wound to his right thigh.

According to reports, upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered Ernest West Jr. outside the home. They promptly called for medical assistance before entering the home, where they discovered the lifeless body of Ernest West Sr., who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to his head.

Ernest West Jr. received immediate medical attention and was subsequently released after treatment at St Catherine Hospital. However, the East Chicago Police Department deemed him a person of interest in the case and transferred him to their holding facility.

The Criminal Investigation Division was called in to further investigate the case.  Lake County Prosecutor’s Office is now reviewing the case with any charges pending the outcome of the investigation. An update on charges is expected soon.
