CHAMPAIGN, IL – Illinois State Police have announced their plan to ramp up efforts to combat distracted driving in several counties across the state.
As part of the Distracted Driving Enforcement Program, patrols will be conducted in Ford, Iroquois, Kankakee, Livingston, and McLean counties during the month of June.
The program aims to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by such incidents.
In May, the Special Traffic Enforcement Patrols (STEP) in Champaign County were successful in targeting various traffic violations, including impaired driving, occupant restraint, speeding, and distracted driving.
Throughout the campaign, a total of 230 citations were issued, with speeding violations comprising the majority at 154. Additionally, 28 citations were given for occupant restraint violations, and four citations/warnings were issued for distracted driving.
