Las Vegas, NV – Travelers and residents near Nevada’s Sierra and Owens Valley should prepare for hazardous weather this weekend, including high winds and heavy snow in higher elevations. Both a Winter Weather Advisory and a Wind Advisory will be in effect Saturday, with conditions expected to cause slick roads and dangerous travel.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Winter Weather Advisory applies to areas above 7,000 feet in the Sierra, beginning Saturday at 1 a.m. and ending at 10 p.m. Snow accumulations of 4–6 inches are forecast for Aspendell, CA, and Whitney Portal, while areas above 9,500 feet may see up to 12 inches. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph, compounding visibility issues.
Meanwhile, the Wind Advisory for the Owens Valley runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, with gusts between 40–55 mph expected. Key impacts include blowing debris, strong crosswinds, and lofted dust, potentially creating hazardous driving conditions along U.S. Highway 395.
Residents are urged to limit travel, particularly in elevated or exposed areas, as roadways may become slick or impassable. Emergency officials recommend carrying chains, extra water, and warm clothing if travel cannot be avoided.
Looking ahead, Las Vegas will experience milder conditions. Saturday brings partly sunny skies and a high near 59 degrees, followed by sunny weather Sunday with highs reaching 62. Next week, temperatures will rise steadily, peaking at 65 degrees by Wednesday.
